Soft Shoe

 

​Beginners start in soft shoes (girls) or reel shoes (boys). In Soft Shoe dancers learn four core dances (each with a vast selection of steps) and an assortment of partner/group dances, as well as participation in choreography. Class begins with warm-ups and stretches and proceeds into more complex footwork. As dancers gain experience they will be able to modify and personalize their dances.

Hard Shoe

 

​Hard shoes are a symbol of advancement. Dancers can only start hard shoe after mastering the first four soft shoe dances and with instructor permission (exceptions are made for experienced dancers joining Balefire). Class begins with basic warm ups and beats. Time is then spent learning the footwork and mastering technique. In hard shoe students will learn 3 core dances, a number of Set dances, and be included in choreography and group work.

Group Dances (Ceili Dances)

​Ceili dances are fun pieces danced in groups of people ranging from 2-8. Most of them are in soft shoe, but there are exceptions.



Dancers of all experience levels will participate in ceilis. However, some ceilis will be taught to only advanced dancers and some to only beginners. Others will include dancers of all experience levels.

Balefire is recognized for having an Audience Participation Ceili at many festivals and events.
